Lot 2929
Constantine II, as Caesar, 316-337. Follis (Bronze, 15 mm, 1.69 g, 7 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Lugdunum. Uncertain mint in Gaul (?), circa 333-340 (?). Laureate and cuirassed bust of Constantine II to left. Rev. CONSTANI/TINVSI (sic!) / CAESAR / PLG• in four lines; above, star. Cf. Bastien, p. 117, I 63 var. (differing reverse legend). Extremely rare. Struck from a worn obverse die, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This coin is one of the great rarities among the 'barbarous imitations'. It is one of only two known examples and by far the best preserved. There are no known official dynastic bronzes from Lyon, so the reverse mint mark was invented by the engraver.
